How to Relearn Your TPMS Sensors
Overview of the Three TPMS Relearn Methods
If your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), here’s what you need to know:
When installing new tires or replacing TPMS sensors, the system may need to be reset or “relearned” to recognize the new sensors. The relearn method depends on your vehicle make and model. Here are the three different relearn methods commonly used, along with examples of vehicle brands for each:
⚠️ For TPMS OBD and Stationary Relearn methods, a TPMS scan tool is typically required to reset and program new TPMS sensors. Since the relearn process requires specialized equipment, many tire shops or dealerships may charge an additional fee for this service.
1. Auto Relearn process
- Description: Some listed vehicles automatically relearn the TPMS sensor IDs after a specific drive cycle or conditions. No special tools are typically needed.
- Examples of Brands: BMW, Mercedes, Mazda, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Audi, Tesla, Mitsubishi, Genesis, Landover, Jaguar
- Procedure: Drive the vehicle for a set time (often 15–30 minutes) at a specific speed, and the system will recognize and relearn the sensors.
2. OBD Relearn
- Description: An OBD tool is required to program or relearn sensor IDs directly through the vehicle’s OBD port. This method is commonly required for vehicles with more advanced TPMS systems.
- Examples of Brands: Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Porsche
- Procedure: Connect an OBD scan tool (Any Brands Tool) to enter sensor IDs into the TPMS system. Some vehicles may also need a short drive afterward to complete the relearn.
3. Stationary Relearn
- Description: This manual relearn procedure typically involves using a TPMS tool (Any Brands) or following specific steps, like turning the ignition on/off, pressing the brake, or using a reset button.
- Examples of Brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep,.
- Procedure: Often starts by placing the vehicle in relearn mode (via a series of button presses or a TPMS tool) and following steps to recalibrate each sensor in sequence. Some models may require the remote to be used or a reset button to be pressed on the dash.
